Newsbase

Who serves a community’s information needs?

A research project connecting information about publishers, their ownership, and the communities they serve.

Public access in preparation · newsbase.org

Why we’re building it

Information about publishers is scattered across directories, filings, and their own websites. We are bringing those records together to examine who serves a community, what they publish, and how they operate.

The approach

The planned public site will present publisher profiles, comparisons, and ways to explore the news available to a community.

The product direction

Publisher profiles

Bring evidence about an organization, its publications, and its offerings into one understandable view.

Community context

Explore which publishers are associated with a place or audience, while making gaps in the record visible.

Relationships over time

Keep ownership, membership, people, and organizational change attached to their source and date.

Comparisons with context

Make peer comparisons intelligible without treating unlike publishers as interchangeable.

What we’re trying to learn

Which records help readers understand a publisher or compare coverage in a community? We are developing the profiles and explanations around those questions.

Public alpha

Public access is in preparation. The features above describe the planned site. We could not verify access to newsbase.org on September 4, 2026.
